Becoming a drummer was no accident for Matthew Wolfgang Garstka as he was lucky enough to be surrounded by well seasoned musicians growing up; including his own guitarist father Greg “Wolfgang” Garstka, as well as fellow musician, mentor, and close family friend Jo Sallins. Being the youngest of three siblings and growing up in a household exposed to Bob Marley, the ideals of these musicians and mentors were instilled in Garstka as well as possessing a rebel heart.
“I refrain from judging others based on race, religion, or class. I will, however, judge people on their character, heart, and honor.”-Garstka
Matt’s passion for music and drumming found its inception at an early age; Matt picked up his first pair of sticks and started grooving at the ripe age of 8. A native to Western Massachusetts, Matt found ways to fill his time outside of drum lessons, as he was also quite a class clown and prankster. “I used to prank call people with my friends…I may have gotten a little carried away when my dad showed me Jerky Boys,” states Garstka. However, focus and dedication to the craft remained a driving force to Matt’s musically inclined future, eventually landing him a scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
The eccentricities characterized of a musician also stayed with Matt from his early, “prank calling,” days leading him to embark on his move out to Los Angeles after completing Berklee and landing a spot with Progressive Metal Band Animals As Leaders. Garstka strives onward towards a dynamic career; after all, his abilities as a multi-faceted musician, educator, and entertainer come in many layers. With an album that dropped in March reaching 23 on the Billboard Charts there is nowhere to continue but up from here for Garstka. Stay Tuned!
